St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2019:   Preparations are now in full swing for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and with the 17th March falling on a Sunday the Parade will assemble as usual on the Creevaghbeg road for a 4 o’clock start.    There was a great turn-out for last year’s Parade despite the clash with Ireland’s 6 Nations Grand Slam decider against England, so hopefully there will be an even greater turnout this year.     A note for our schools and the community, voluntary and sporting groups who intend to take part in the parade, there is no general Theme this year so each entrant can select their own theme and present a short script on their theme at the Assembly point before the parade.                                               The annual Table Quiz fundraiser for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place this Friday night, February 15th in Cooneys Hotel at 9.00p.m.,  tables of 4, €40,  with numerous raffle prizes up for grabs so please come along and support what is always an enjoyable night out.

Death of Joan Nolan:  the sad death occurred at the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore on Feb 4thlast of Mrs Joan Nolan (nee Freeman), Donore, Multyfarnham and formerly Moyvore.   We extend our deepest sympathy to her husband Kevin, sons Aaron and Keith, daughters Belinda and Amy, their partners Emer, Ross, Chantelle and Ary, grandchildren Hannah,Kayleigh, Kaden, Elle and Darragh, her father and step-mum Kevin and Joan, sister Rose (Killian), brothers Jimmy and Patrick, step-sister Jeanette, father-in-law John and to all her relatives, neighbours and many friends.  May God grant rest to her Soul.

Death of Malachy Devine,    Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs Jane Devine, her daughter Karen, sons Stephen and Martin, formerly Ballymahon on the death last month of Jane’s husband Malachy, Dysart, Roscommon and Ahascragh, Galway and to his relatives and friends.   May he rest in peace.

Day of Prayer:  a Day of Prayer for the Victims and Survivors of Abuse takes place on Friday 15thFebruary.  A Candle of Atonement will be lit on Friday in St. Mel’s Cathedral at the 10.00a.m. Mass.

Wedding Ring:  a man’s Wedding Ring was found in Newcastle Wood last October and was handed in to the local Garda Station.   The owner should contact Ballymahon or Longford Garda Station.

Death of Moss Farrell:    We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Margaret Farrell on the death on January 24th last of her husband Tom (Moss), Kingsbury, England and Bethlehem, Tubberclair, Glasson.   Our condolences also to Moss’s brothers Sonny, Kieran and Oliver, sisters Annie Jo (Kelly), Bridget (Armstrong) and Marie (McNicholas), nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  May he rest in peace.

21st Birthday: Congratulations to Alex Moorhead, son of Albert and Deirdre,  Brannigan who celebrated his 21st Birthday at a party in Skellys pub on Saturday night last with his family and lots of friends.   Welcome home to Alex’s sister Allison who travelled over from New York to surprise her brother on his special Birthday.  What a lovely surprise.    Best wishes to Alex into the future.

Confirmation at Tang National School:   Congratulations to all the students from Tang National School who were confirmed by Bishop Tom Deenighan last Thursday in Ballymore Church.   It was a happy and meaningful occasion for everyone present.    The following were confirmed:  Grace Daly, Laura Glancy,  Emma Maynard,  Kate Maynard, Adam Nugent, Daniel  Rhatigan,  Tyler Rhatigan, Lily Russell, Emily Ryan, Douwe Sibelink, Taylor Slevin and Daniel Taplin.

G.A.A. Very well done to the Longford Senior football team who had a great win over Carlow in the League on Sunday last, played in Carlow.    We wish them the best of luck in their remaining games.

CASA:   Longford CASA group are holding a Church gate collection this coming weekend 16th and 17thFeb.   CASA are a voluntary organization providing a social outlet for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in our community through monthly socials.   They also provide flights to Lourdes for seriously ill pilgrims.   Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Mullinalaghta:   We wish the best of luck to Mullinalaghta senior football team when they play Dr. Crokes of Killarney in the All-Ireland Clubs semi-final in Thurles on Saturday next.

Death of Mrs Ellen Lloyd:  It was with deep regret that we learnt of the peaceful death on January 31st2019 at Thomond Lodge Nursing Home of Mrs Ellen Lloyd, (nee Powell),  Leo Casey Terrace, Ballymahon and native of London.    Ellen lived with her husband Pat in England for a long number of years and came to live in his native Ballymahon over 30 years ago where she settled in easily with her neighbours and made many friends in the area down the years.     She was a very pleasant and agreeable lady and a most obliging and considerate neighbor, always full of determination.         A huge number of people called to Thomond Lodge where her remains lay in repose which bore testimont to the respect which is held in the area for all of the Lloyd family.    St. Matthews Church was also packed at her Funeral Mass which was celebrated by Fr. Liam Murray where the Church Choir sang some beautiful hymns.   Ellen is survived by her heartbroken and dedicated husband Pat, her family Carol, Raymond, Linda, Barbara, Malcolm, Laurence and John to whom we extend our deepest sympathy,  also to all her in-laws, relatives, friends and neighbours.   Her remains were laid to rest in Forgney Cemetery.   May her dear Soul rest in peace.

Ploughing:    Granard is to be the venue for the annual County Longford Ploughing Championships on Sunday March 24th at Higginstown.     Together with the ploughing, there will be the usual side shows, trade stands, live music and vintage exhibitions.

Valentines Day:  We wish you all a very happy St. Valentine’s Day on Thursday 14th February.

Huge Honour for Frank Keegan:   We send our best wishes to Frank Keegan, New York and native of Barry, Ballymahon who has been chosen by The Longford Association in New York to be their 2019 Guest of Honour.    Frank has been living in New York since 1967 and just recently announced his retirement where he has been working as a Manhattan Resident building manager for the past 45 years.    We hope he enjoys the Banquet on March 2nd in Manhattan with his wife Hannah and their family.
