St. Vincent de Paul:   The local Branch of Vincent de Paul are holding their Annual Church Gate collection this weekend 8th and 9th December at both Masses in St. Matthews Church.  They depend greatly on our support.    It’s members work all year round to help the less well off in the locality.  It is a voluntary organization.    Please support them this coming weekend, especially with the Christmas coming up.


Christmas Carol Service:   St. Matthews Church Choir who will be joined by the Innyside Singers will be performing their annual Christmas Carol Service in St. Matthews Church on Sunday evening next, December 9th commencing at 8.00p.m.       All welcome.   Come and enjoy the traditional Carols.  Admission Free.


Christmas Art Exhibition:  Ballymahon Art Club & Ballymahon Community Library warmly welcome everyone to the official opening of their Christmas Art Exhibition in The Goldsmith Room, Ballymahon Library on Tuesday, December 11th at 7.30p.m.     Light refreshments will be served.    The Exhibition will remain open until the end of the Christmas season.   All welcome.


Abbeyshrule 10th Community Christmas Craft Fair:  A reminder that Abbeyshrule Christmas Craft Fair is on Sunday 9th December at The Rustic Inn from 12-6p.m.    Lots of Craft, Art and food stalls, as well as facepainting from 12pm.      Santa and Mrs Claus will be there from 3-5p.m. (€4 per child, €10 for 3 children) .    To book for the children’s Craft workshop from 1-2.30p.m. (€4 per child)  please contact Therese on 087-9280789 asap.     Vintage Tractor Run to start at 5.00p.m.     A raffle will be held in aid of local Autism groups.   Everyone welcome.


Longford Hospice Homecare:   Cllr. Micheal Carrigy would like to invite you to attend a Coffee morning in aid of Longford Hospice Homecare that he will be hosting on Friday 14th December from 10.00a.m. to 1p.m. at his Constituency office on 2 Dublin Street, Longford.   Join him for a cuppa and a chat.   All donations will be going to this most worthy cause.   All welcome.


Samaritan Christmas Concert:  The 27th Annual Samaritan Christmas Concert will take place on Thursday 6th December in the Franciscan Friary , Athlone at 8.00p.m.          It will feature the Army Band of the 2nd Brigade, St. Brigid’s Community Choir, Athlone Pipe Band and Tenors Sean Costello and Frank Naughten.                                                                                                                                                              Tickets @ €12 are available at the Franciscan Friary in Athlone.    Your support at the concert will be very much appreciated. The Samaritans are available on freecall 116 123   24 hours a day for anyone who is lonely, troubled and needs to talk to someone in confidence.



Death of John Garrahan:  The peaceful death occurred at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin on November 26th of John Garrahan, Keenagh and  formerly of Foigha and Hillside, New Jersey, U.S.A.   Born in 1947, he enjoyed shooting, farming and racing , he was involved in Kenagh G.A.A. Club and was a very prominent player with the Club for many years.          He ran a very successful Pub in the village of Kenagh for many years but left Ireland and travelled to the States thirty years ago where he also ran a successful Landscaping business.   At his Funeral Mass in St. Dominic’s Church, Kenagh last week which was celebrated by Fr. Tom Barden with the music performed by Tony Moran, John’s only brother Mickey spoke fondly of his brother who returned to Keenagh just last January.   The large number of people who attended the Mass and also called to Thomond Lodge Nursing Home where he lay in repose,  bore testimont to the respect which has always been held for John who was a very popular man in the area.           His remains were laid to rest at Forgney Cemetery.   We extend our deepest sympathy to John’s brother Mickey, sister-in-law Caroline, nieces Ciosa and Niamh, nephews Michael and John, relatives, neighbours and many friends.   May he rest in peace.

Bog Lane Youth Theatre:  take to the stage on this Thursday 6th of December and Friday, the 7th December at 8.30p.m. for their annual show.   This season there are two one-act Plays “The Honeys”, directed by Frank McGrath and “Brush yourself off and move on” directed by Tony Tiernan.    Also there are two Monologues “Dogface” performed by Muireann Claffey and “What a way to spend the weekend”, performed by Blathnaid McDonough.     Admission is Adults €10 and Youths €5.  Booking at 087-6479 564.   So why not go along and see local talent on show and support these young people in just their second Shows.

Death of Mrs Eithne Lyons:  Our deepest sympathy is extended to Kathleen and Mary Lyons, Strandhill road, Sligo on the death on Sunday last last, 2nd Dec of their mother Eithne Lyons (nee O’Brien), formerly of Carrickboy, Co Longford and Ballykilroe, Co Westmeath.    Eithne and her late husband Lally ran a highly successful shop in Carrickboy for a long number of years.                Our condolences also to Eithne’s brother, Fr. Tony (Columban Father), sister Marie, grandchildren Emer and Kevin, son-in-law Terence and all her relatives and friends.   May God grant rest to her Soul.


Get Well Wishes:  We send our Get well wishes for a speedy recovery to Kenagh correspondent, Paddy Egan who is recuperating after a recent hip operation.   We wish Paddy all the best.


Royal Canal Group:-   a limited Edition of a 2019 Calendar titled “Ballymahon Royal Canal” is on sale at Nally’s Forecourt, Diffley’s Hardware,  Jenny’s Flowers,  Finn’s Centra,  Egan Tyres Terlicken  and the Ticket Office Brannigan Harbour.     The Calendar contains a brief history of the Royal Canal, Seasonal photographs, local businesses and would be an ideal present for someone at home or abroad.                The Calendars are just €10 each.                                                                                                                Proceeds go towards ongoing improvements and maintenance of our Walkway  by the Canal Group.  Many thanks to all the sponsors for their support.

Fireside Tales No 16:    Congratulations to Jude Flynn who launched his 16th Edition of “Fireside Tales” from around Longford Town and County.     As always his book would make a great Christmas present for someone you know, especially for those who perhaps have left the area.   For people in the Ballymahon area you might enjoy reading Canon Albert Kingston’s happy memories of his 34 years in the parishes of Ardagh/Moydow, Tashinney, Kenagh and Ballymahon and is now retired.    He describes these years as being interesting and rewarding while learning that “ Church and community are inseparable”.       Tom O’Reilly, Park Place, Colehill, born in 1926 talks about life in the Irish army which he joined at the age of 14 years  and later decided to join the British army.  He married a girl called Peggy Skelly from Tenelick who sadly passed away in 2009.     Another article in Jude’s book is called “Two Ballymahon Poets” written by Michael Casey, Barley Harbour, Newtowncashel who talks about two poets coming from the same parish namely Oliver Goldsmith and John Keegan Casey – Leo.            We wish Jude the best of luck with his latest Edition of Fireside Tales which costs €20.    The books are available for sale at Applegreen Service Station, Mostrim road, Ballymahon.



Soiree at The River Inn:   Ballymahon/Landevant French Twinning group are holding their annual Fundraising Soiree in The River Inn on Friday, Dec 7th.   Tickets for the event are  €5.  Refreshments will be served on the night and music will be provided by special Guest Artist Pat Kelly from Kildare.   All are welcome.   Your support will be appreciated.  Tickets are available at The River Inn or any of the committee members.

Birthday wishes:   congratulations to Mrs Bridie Smullen, Creevaghbeg who celebrated a special birthday on Saturday night last at a party with her family, relatives and lots of friends in Cooney’s Hotel.    We wish Bridie, her husband Mick and their family all the best into the future and hope she enjoyed the night.


Senior Citizens party:  will be held in Tang Community Centre on Sunday next 9th Dec at 1.00p.m.





Garda Band Concert:   a full house attended the very enjoyable Garda Band Concert which was held in St. Matthews Church on Sunday afternoon last.   It was actually the Band’s first time to play in Ballymahon and their very entertaining music and singing put everyone into the Christmas spirit.  Very well done to all the Gardai in Ballymahon who organized this very special event especially Emma.      Following the Concert and  Santa & Mrs Clause’s  visit to Ballymahon , the Christmas lights were lit in the town.      Well done to all involved.


Sympathy:  Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs Kathleen O’Rorke,  Killinure, Glasson on the death last week of her husband Tadhg, also to his son Glenn, daughter Hazel (Cassidy), son-in-law Chris, sister Rita (O’Toole),  grandchildren Sean, Ben and Holly and all his relatives and friends.  May he rest in peace.
