Christmas Customer Evening:  Best of luck to Jenny White of Jenny’s Flowers & Gifts who is hosting her 6th Annual Christmas Customer Evening on Thursday 22nd November from 6p.m. to 9.00o.m.      Festival refreshments will be served .  Everyone welcome.


Songs of Praise Service:    a Songs of Praise Service will be held in St. Catherine’s Church, Ballymahon on Sunday the 25th November.  All are most welcome to attend.


Samaritan Christmas Concert:  The 27th Annual Samaritan Christmas Concert will take place on Thursday 6th December in the Franciscan Friary , Athlone at 8.00p.m.          It will feature the Army Band of the 2nd Brigade, St. Brigid’s Community Choir, Athlone Pipe Band and Tenors Sean Costello and Frank Naughten.                                                                                                                                                              Tickets @ €12 are available at the Franciscan Friary in Athlone.    Your support at the concert will be very much appreciated. The Samaritans are available on freecall 116 123   24 hours a day for anyone who is lonely, troubled and needs to talk to someone in confidence.


Open Day:  Lanesboro Community College will hold their Open Day for 5th and 6th classes on Thursday 22nd November.   Students will have the opportunity to attend classes, meet students and teachers and experience secondary school for a day.   All parents are welcome to visit the school on the evening of the 22nd November between 7.00p.m. and 9.00p.m. to find out more about the school.    The Principal’s address will begin at 7.00p.m. followed by a tour of the school where you will meet the students and teachers.   Please contact the school for more details on 04333 21139.

One Act Drama Festival:   a programme of top quality drama is on the cards at this year’s One Act Drama Festival in The Bog Lane Theatre Ballymahon.                                                                                       Starting on this Friday 16th November and running until Sunday 18th November the festival includes productions from companies across the region.                                                                                               The Festival kicks off on Friday night, with the first play beginning at 8.15p.m. sharp.   Friday night’s line-up includes Martello Productions from Wicklow with Notes on Fallen Leaves by Ayub Khan-Din.   Compantas Lir from Claregalway will perform The Zoo Story by Edward Albee and finally New Ross Drama Workshop will perform Spector by Don Nigro.                                                                                    Saturday night’s entertainment will also begin at 8.15p.m. and it will include Prosperous Dramatic Society with Breathless by John McKenna.    Modelbox Productions from Wicklow will take to the stage with “A Frank Exchange” by Nicholas Marsh  and Athlone Little Theatre will perform Heart’s Desire by Caryl Churchill.                                                                                                                                                   Sunday night is the finale of the Festival and the performances will begin at 7.15p.m.      Dunmore Amateur Dramatic Society will perform “Come Along the Road until You Stop Dead” by Eoghan Rua Finn.    Balally Players Theatre Company from Dublin will take to the stage with The Giant Killers by Eve and Andrew Pearson-Wright and the final performance will by Seamus O’Kelly Players from Loughrea with Lucy in the Sky by Tony Layton.                                                                                                                        The adjudicator for this year’s One Act Festival is Alan Howley.   Alan currently plays Eoghan O’Brien in RTE’s long-running soap Fair City and his film and television work includes “The Commitments”, “Hush-A-Bye-Baby”, “Alarm”, “Stardust”, “Mattie and the Clinic”.                                                Admission is €12 with Concessions €10.    For booking and Festival Club  please telephone Breege at 09064-32230.


Social Dance:  The next Social Dance in Streete Parish Park, Streete, Co Westmeath takes place on Friday 16th November when music will be supplied by the very popular musical duo Mary O’Connor and Pat Kelly.  Dancing 10.00 to 12.30.  Free Raffle and sit down supper.   Admission €10.   Go along for a great night’s entertainment.

Paul Barden Tournament Winners:   congratulations to Ballymahon/Forgney U.14/U.15 team members Darragh Finlass and Brian Maloney who were on the winning team  who won the Paul Barden Tournament Final at Clonguish on Thursday night last.   The tournament was run over the last four weeks.   Also taking part in the competition were local lads  Shane Quinn, Sean Maynard and Charlie Byrne.              The winning team were delighted to be presented with lovely Jerseys by Paul Barden himself.  The Runners-up were presented with hats.   Well done to all involved.


Royal Canal Group:-   a limited Edition of a 2019 Calendar titled “Ballymahon Royal Canal” is on sale at Nally’s Forecourt, Diffley’s Hardware,  Jenny’s Flowers,  Finn’s Centra,  Egan Tyres Terlicken  and the Ticket Office Brannigan Harbour.     The Calendar contains a brief history of the Royal Canal, Seasonal photographs, local businesses and would be an ideal present for someone at home or abroad.                                                                                                                                                                                                  Proceeds go towards ongoing improvements and maintenance of our Walkway  by the Canal Group.  Many thanks to all the sponsors for their support.

Ballymahon G.A.A:     The club’s recent joint Auction with the Ladies football club was a huge success.   Both clubs wish to thank everyone for the support they received  from the local businesses and the local community who showed great generosity in donating items for the Auction and to all who  bought items at the event.  Well done to all involved.    The mens Club AGM will take place on Saturday 8th December in the Clubhouse.   Congratulations to Mike Cooney, Cooneys Hotel, a great support of the Club,  who won over €11,000 in the Club’s weekly Lotto.




Death of Mrs Anne Farrell:   We wish to extend our sincere sympathy to Anne, John and Jimmy Farrell, Lissakitt on the death on 3rd November of their mother Anne.    She was a lovely, quiet lady, a good friend and neighbour to many and a highly respected member of the local community.   Our condolences also to her brother Johnny, sister-in-law Margaret, daughters-in-law Marie & Frances, son-in-law Martin, much-loved grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.   May her dear Soul rest in peace.


Leinster Club Football:   Very well done to Mullinalaghta football team who beat Offaly champions,  Rhode at O’Connor Park, Tullamore on Sunday afternoon last in the Leinster Club Senior Football Championship.   We wish them the best of luck when they go on to play the semi-final of the Championship against Eire Og, Carlow.    Hard luck to Rathcline who narrowly lost out against Hores Wood, Wexford  in the Intermediate Championship.


Death of Barney Halligan:  Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Barney Halligan, Drumloher, Ardagh who passed away peacefully in his 99th year on the 8th November at the Regional Hospital, Mullingar, pre-deceased by his wife Mary Elizabeth (Trautt).     Our condolences to Barney’s son Jimmy, daughters Bernie Halligan-Fisher, Mairead McDonnell and Majella McQuaide, daughter-in-law Anne, sons-in-law John and Tom, grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and many friends.  May he rest in peace.


Church Gate collection:   The organisers of the Church Gate Collection in Ballymahon at the weekend,  in aid of Gorta, the organization dedicated to ending hunger and poverty in rural Africa , wish to thank everyone who contributed  to the collection.   Your support is very much appreciated.

Death of Noel Hanlon:   the death occurred in South Africa on 3rd November of Noel Hanlon, native of Longford Town at the age of 78.     He ran the very successful clothing Factory, Manford here in Ballymahon for many years back in the ‘eighties employing a huge number of people at the time making men’s suits and luxury overcoats.                                                                                                                       We extend our deepest sympathy to his son Patrick, owner of the Applegreen garage and supermarket in Longford and also in Ballymahon, his son Robert, daughters Jennifer, Elaine, Louise, Anne, Nuala, Maria and Emma, sister Anne, brothers Oliver and Fr. Francis , relatives and friends.  May he rest in peace.


Death of John Groarke:   the sudden death occurred on the 6th October of Mr John Groarke, Listowel, Kerry, formerly Keel, Ballymahon.    John is survived by his wife Josephine, daughter Esther, sons Thomas and John Pio, grandchildren, brother Jimmy, sisters Kathleen and Maureen, relatives and friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathy,  also to the Groarke family in Keel.  Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
